My Kitchen Helpers
There’s a Dog in Me kitchen, What I’m a Gonna Do?
While none of the mammoth was wasted, Oog and his family were slobs and butchered pieces of the beast near their homes. They were not too particular where the tossed the remnants of their past meals either. These habits were bound to attract a less than wholesome crowd, and sure enough proto-wolves were soon lurking about the edges of the camp. Wolves may be many things, but they’re not stupid, they now a good thing when they see it and fairly regular meals is right up there on the list of priorities, along with catching a nice long nap in a warm soft spot. It was inevitable that Oog’s species and the wolves get together eventually.
And so the domestication of the dog began, with lots of tinkering by man in between. The first dogs were bred for hunting, warfare, and eating. Today people still eat dogs in some cultures (though I find cat much tastier), and hunting is a sport rather than a necessity so dogs adapted themselves to being carried in vacuous starlet’s purses. Canis lupis familiaris is a survivor if nothing else.
The process goes on even to this day, especially in my house, notably the kitchen. I can’t open the fridge, or move a pan without my kitchen helpers being right there, but I don’t; mind. It is nice to have the company while I cook and that is the main factor in man’s adoption of the dog, companionship. The two husky mixes that haunt my kitchen are masters of time suckage, black holes of affection, and incredibly food driven. Yukon, the big boy keeps us on a tight schedule, giving little howls when it is his dinner time, time for his snack, and our dinner time. Austrella the little girl uses her looks as many females do to get what she wants, though she can nose nudge with the best of them.
It is all worth the pestering though as it is tough to be blue with Yukon’s clowning and Austrella’s cuddling. In fact I am certain they believe we are the pets and they run the show. Now if you’ll excuse me Yukon has indicated it is time for me to get into the kitchen and whip up some jalapeño popcorn, that stuff is like husky crack…
